Mazda BT-50 GT, is awesome!
The level comfort and trim for a yute was the highest I have seen. Especially the space if sitting in the rear, it's a full seat. The drive is very good, and a very enjoyable experience. The thing that took a while to get used to is quite heavy steering. The engine is powerful and economical, for a 3.2 TD.

nice to drive but poor build quality
Positives:- Performance has improved since hitting 40k km with smoother and better acceleration. It has been reliable and good in fuel. average 8.8l/100km with 50/50 highway and city.
Good seating position and good leg room. Handles the road well and hits dirt roads well.
Great steering wheel size
Great steering wheel size
Negatives:-I got leather seats which are terrible quality and after 12,000km had worn a white patch from where my clothes rubs against the seat when I sit down (suggesting it isn't real leather). Dealer would not repair as Mazda would not pay and my paint and leather protection said they would not cover either. Seats are very hot and sweaty. Needs seat coolers.
Plastic seat cowl, were electric seat controls are, broke off 6 times and gets repaired every service under warranty. Plastic door handles inside are covered in poor quality plastic and peels off. (haven't in my car but I have seen a few from friends). Interior quality is very poor and contains a lot of cheap plastic. Sound system and GPS are terrible. Don't bother with mazda fixing it.
Few times in the rain the back slides out with nil assistant from traction control.
Running cost of Diesel is good and have been able to do close to 1000km in 1 tank all highway but general 650-800. Service cost from dealer is expensive its $390 and $590 alternating with intervals 10,000km were in ranger its 15,000 service intervals.

Poor Fuel Economy
Recently I traded a 2012 Ford Ranger 3.2 for a 2017 BT50. To my regret the BT50 has a fuel consumption of 12.5ltrs per 100kms compared to my old Ranger's 8.5ltrs per 100kms. It's been explained to me by the local Mazda dealer, because all new diesel vehicles brought into Australia are now required to have a diesel particle filter (DPF) fitted which requires more fuel to burn off some of the emissions.
How does the government think this is more environmentally friendly to use more fuel compared to slightly less emissions?

gearbox
I lost my manual gearbox at 75,000 km and thought that was bad but 55,000 isnt good. They seem to have bearing failure and the garage who is doing mine up is saying that the bearings that mazda are providing him are up graded ones. so they are aware there is a problem. Unfortunately the 3 year or 100,000 km was nt kind to me and Mazda wouldnt do a thing for me that is in both Queenstown and ,Invercagill branches of MacCauley motors.

Lousy Fuel Economy
Bodet Bt 50 Software Free
Really poor fuel economy is letting down an otherwise great vehicle. I'm only getting 14L/100km, even on highway trips (no load). Mazda are looking at the problem but early indications are that they are putting it down to my tyres and modifications (bulbar, winch, rocksliders, bashplates etc). Not happy with Mazda's slow response. Watch this space.

Manual gerabox failure
BT50 with 47000 Kms started making severe noises from gearbox, stopped when clutch in and when in top gear (direct drive). New gearbox on the way. Never been a tow vehicle except for 5M boat occasionally and garden trailer. Some 4WD but that is what it is for. Other than that good to drive, suspension is Opposite Lock with Bilsteins and 2 inch lift.

Not as powerful as a Toyota
The Toyota models have a bit more grunt then the Mazda BT-50. All the internal features are good and up to date with the in things but if you travel distance you may want something with a bit more power. I have had Mazda's before and I would probably not get this model again as it's probably best for people in town.

Great for towing, tradies, camping and dirt bikes.
I upgraded from a 2005 (last of the old line) 4x4 Hilux 3.0TD Manual, minus the 4x4 as I had a dirt bike at the time.
Alloy tray (and back seat is just big enough to fit a dirt bike and enough camping gear for me and the mrs. The power compared to the 3 Litre 4cl Hilux is a noticeable improvement. I thought an extra cylinder and 200ml wouuldn't make much of a difference but I was wrong.
I like the under seat storage of the extra cab, and though I wouldn't make my worst enemy sit in the back seat of an extra cab, (90 degree hard foam seating) it's great for precious cargo and/or the dog. for me it was me and my mate's dirt bike gear, with the two bikes, two ramps and jerry cans in the tray.

There is one negative thing about this vehicle which stops it being 5/5, The air intake hose on the intercooler is prone to cracking and putting the engine on limp mode due to pressure loss. Ditto for the Ranger.
If you are considering the 4x4 option, just remember a replacement front diff on a 2005 HILUX costs between 1250 and 1400 as I broke mine twice (%*@ IFS') so get some insurance in a diff lock for the front.

Smoking dpf at traffic lights/fuel stations etc
I got 1km from the show room after picking up my new bt-50 and smoke was streaming out from underneath the vehicle now after 4 visits back to south tweed mazda, one visit lasting a complete week the problem is still not fixed . the fuel economy is shocking power varies from great to pathetic have had so many different stories, excuses reasons. Mazda must really think very little of the intelligence of the people that buy their vehicles because time and time again it's been all alot of crap.

This vehicle has disgraceful fuel economy
I owned a 2012 model BT50 it was satisfactory so I bought another. Now the 2017 dpf model is a different kettle fish. The sticker on the windscreen says 10l/h combined test 12.4 l/h urban 8.6 l/h extra urban. Oh my goodness this is nothing like the real test averaging 11-12 highway driving The real test came when I hooked on the caravan.. 20+ l/h but the real stinger is lack of real diesel power on hills. The only real difference between this model and older one is the DPF. A system to catch black soot. The oil now is black at 2000k from the extra fuel pumped in to the motor. The motor is de tuned. I expect a backlash against Mazda. But the people at Mazda don't seem to care blaming extras on the vehicle. But I had the same extras on it also. Cost you say? about 12-16 lts per tank of 80 lts extra on highway driving.

Bought on the strength of reviews, repent at leisure
Poor seating, the leather seats seem to be an afterthought, plastic seat tray broke a couple of times. Info screen failed once, climate control failed 2 or 3 times, poor service interval, annoying recurring vibrations and rattles, there was no reversing aids or camera as standard, the ride was harsh, the manual gearbox has a positive shift but the drivetrain has too much slack in it to make regular smooth gear changes . I've traded it for a Triton Exceed, much happier.

2012 gearbox
Overall a good ute but its back in the shop again for the 4th time with manual gearbox issues. Within 92000km. Manual boxes are a heap of crap!
It was replaced around 50000km and didnt last due to mechanic error at the dealer with a new one installed at 60000km. Now not sure what is going to happen.

Let The Driver Decide
Handling and performance good, nice and quiet to drive but you can still hear the power of the engine. The big No No is the courtesy lights staying on,I have had a flat battery a couple of times due to this and every time I turn the fan on the aircon comes on,I don't won't it on in the winter I won't to warm the car up. Reliable no problems. Have since gone into the passenger doors and installed switches to bypass the door being open,it is possible to lock the keys in now, but works well.

Trouble free motoring for 82000klms
Bought the Mazda BT50 XTR dual cab new with 20 inch rims bullbar and lights on impulse in 2014, and over the last three years have done 82000 kms with absolutely no problems, The fuel economy from the 3.2 litre diesel has been excellent. Have used it to tow my caravan, go 4wd in difficult terrain it performed flawlessly. Was very impressed with the 4wd systems including its diff locks and hill decent features.
Mazda invited me and other BT50 owners to their tuff mudder event which showcased what these vehicles are capable of doing, and I must say IO was totally impressed, no way known that i would ever put my vehicle into such extreme situations as was done during this event,.
Traded the Mazda just now on the FORD Ranger Wildtrak.

At present, disappointing!
Family have just taken delivery of a new current model Mazda BT 50 auto dual cab XTR.
At 7pm drove it all of 20klms! & the powertrain warning light comes on & then the engine warning light comes on??
Here's the next thing-- call Roadside Assistance(supposedly a 24hr service?) which came with this new ute deal, they say 'yes we'll have someone attend within the hour'--- no one shows up --- approx 9pm Roadside Assistance calls back & says 'we can't raise either of our two operators in that area'? 'OK get a tow truck to take ute back to the dealership' (20klms away) -- Roadside Assistance says 'you will have to pay for that service'???? Why have Roadside Assistance if there is no assistance or you have to pay for the tow service! At 10pm Roadside Assistance was politely told what to do with their 'service' --- called RACQ & tow truck was there in 30minutes.
Mazda needs to smarten up!

Best Value Diesel Cab Chassis In Class
Value buyers looking for an affordable diesel, manual, cab tray should look no further. While the model is somewhat aged compared to Hilux and other variants at the low end of the market the BT-50 in my view offers the best overall value for money. The 2.2L manual diesel is probably not a class leader in any category but at the end of the day it is cheap to buy and cheap to run. Dealers offer great deals on in stock vehicles as I guess they aren't a volume seller and they want to keep their dealer stock turning over. Engine is a harsh = yes, Gearbox is notchy and sometimes difficult to find a gear = yes, ride is a little unkempt (even for a cab chassis = yes) but it gets the job done. The biggest gripes I have is that the gear box (6 speed manual) isn't well suited to the engine as 6th gear never really gets used and changing through 5 ratio's to get to 5th at about 50kmh is a chore around town, also trying to run the engine at low rpm to save fuel results in unsightly and smelly puffs of white diesel smoke when taking off at the lights. Anyway it's probably the only diesel tray ute that can be had near new (dealer demo with under 1000km) and fall within the Federal Governments immediate write off for tax purposes of $20k + GST for small businesses.

Worst I have owned
This is the third Bt50 I have owned, it is the current 2017 model purchased in May, firstly the gear change is terrible and was told by the service department 'this is normal for this model' but even worse The Bluetooth unit was unusable and in fact dangerous to use while driving no buttons anywhere to answer a call other than on the screen, extremely poor reception to the degree that no one could understand you. Only solution offered was to install an additional microphone!! NO THE ONLY SOLUTION WAS TO RIP IT OUT AND SPEND $3200 PUTTING IN A DECENT UNIT. When you are doing 1500klms a week and your vehicle is your office and Mazda sell the BT50 as a work horse then they need to get it right!! Well they didn't this time. Perfect way to loose a long term customer as I replace my vehicle every 3 years needless to say this will be my last BT50..never again!!!

So good Im ordering another one!
I have a 2012 XT duel cab 3.2 Auto. Its got all the accessories Mazda could stick on it, absolutely no engine mod chips, the manufacturers spend sqillions getting these to run good and we think we spent a few hundred and they will run better, I doubt it. Its done just on 100,000 ks and hasn't missed a beat, Tows my 2T caravan magnificently, economy is round the 13L/100K if I stay under 80ks but progressively goes up to 14 when I sit on 100ks, without the van its round 9.4L/100ks
Its kerb weight is 2900kgs with all my junk in it and its so good, my son is going to take it and I'm getting another new one.
Of all the reviews I've read some are having a few issues, but to be fair you look at the other brands (say hilux or triton) and the reviews are much the same, 330k turbots, 200k fuel pumps,200k trannies, for god sake don't look for reviews on the VW cause the list is horrendous.
Anyway I like it and it seems to like me so I'm off the get another one very soon!

Brilliant BT50
Have owned my BT-50 for just over a year and I have to admit that I am quietly impressed. I took quite a while deciding on my next ute and found that the BT - 50 offered the best value for money for my needs. Although it has less technology than the Ranger, this makes it more attractive as its simple inclusions offer less opportunity for failure. I am averaging 9.6l/100km and tow a 2500kg caravan and achieve 12.9l/100km. Reversing camera is ideal for hooking up trailers and the heavy suspension deals with high ball weights well. Off road I have been impressed with no after market mods I have been able to take it everywhere I have wanted to go and the diff lock works well. Reliability has been fantastic so far and service costs have been reasonable.

Questions & Answers
My Mazda BT 50, 3.0 CRD model 2008 engine switches off when a battery terminal is removed. Should this be happening?
Just wondering if there's any point in asking a question on this site as no one seems to get a response or answer?
We've just purchased a 2019 BT 50 dual cab and have read a number of reviews saying the paintwork is really thin. Was offered paint protection through the dealer but my panel beater advised not to use their products and has referred me to a professional car detailer to have a ceramic protection put on. Apparently the stuff he uses has a 95% glass content had he will guarantee the work for 7yrs. Any thoughts please
Don't waste your money on paint protection. It won't achieve anything but lighten your walletThanks Mark
